Union challenges Defence Force pay ‘freeze’

A union representing civilian staff in the NZ Defence Force says a de facto pay freeze is unlawful and inappropriate, setting the stage for an employment dispute as the military tries to fill a $30 million hole in its budget.
In July, the Defence Force announced it would lay off civilian staff and make other spending cuts to deal with a “largely uncontrollable” budget shortfall sparked by rising costs.
