One of the city’s great institutions began humbly as the Edmonton Museum of Arts in 1924, hopping through pop-up and more “permanent” locations until it claimed its space northeast of an all-grass open lawn of the then-recently-redubbed Churchill Square in 1969 — by then called the Edmonton Art Gallery in its beautiful brutalist box.

By 2005, we had the provincial Art Gallery of Alberta as a cultural hub in the city’s evolving core, five years later renovated into its current decorative form echoing Northern Lights and the North Saskatchewan’s curves.

Over the years, countless solo and group exhibitions, legendary provincial Biennials and interactive Refinery parties brought us from classical to modern to the current era of identity-focused art.

With a massive collection of historical and contemporary art including painter Emily Carr, photographer Yousef Karsh and the recently departed Alex Janvier, the AGA is deservedly celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend with a multi-stage party.

First up, dressed up, it’s the AGA100 Late Night Birthday Bash 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. Saturday, including flashlight tours of its current exhibitions, karaoke on August Klintberg’s Love Empire stage and of course awesome, art-inspired food and a complimentary cocktail with the price of admission — $84.40 at youraga.ca, PS.

Then, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday, it’s AGA100 Birthday on the Square — Churchill, with its facsimile statue, to be precise.

Interactive art stations and workshops, live music and performances and, yum yum, a cake-cutting ceremony are all on deck — plus the 26-vendor Centennial Market, getting back to the square’s original roots as Edmonton’s original market square.

Hoop dancer Lakota Tootoosis, Beth Portman, Audrey Ochoa, The Hearts, DJ Creeasian and Carter and the Capitals are all performing.

Inside the gallery, mirroring all this, is the exhibition 1924: Edmonton and the Beginning of the Art Gallery of Alberta, as well as AGA100: A Lasting Legacy showing off 90 key paintings and sculptures donated by the Ernest E. Poole Foundation in 1975.

Shows featuring the rest of the collection are also up through the next few months — so please pop inside to fully appreciate AGA’s ongoing legacy.

The List is published every Thursday. If you have events you’d like amplified or have any corrections or updates, please email [email protected].
